Manifesto

As WOA President I am very proud of our many achievements.

We introduced the NOA Grants Programme, delivering over $350,000 to NOAs and Olympian-led projects.

We recruited NOA Development Officers and grew WOA to six full-time staff to support you, our national associations.

We ran the award-winning Olympians Reunion Centre in Rio, and two World Olympians Forums.

We transformed WOA finances, delivering transparency, clean audits and big budget increases from the IOC.

We ran the first ever global health survey of Olympians.

We gave NOAs a direct say in running the WOA by introducing continental representation on the Executive Committee and gender equality.

And we created the hugely popular OLY initiative – used by more than 13,500 Olympians.

But our work is not yet done.

This has been a team effort.

And I ask you to keep that team intact, so that we can take WOA to the next level.

We will do this by increasing our support to you.

I will propose more grant money for NOAs, more development officers, and more Continental workshops.

We will bring you great OLY Houses and benefits for Olympians in Tokyo, Beijing and Paris.

We will expand our life transition, education and business opportunities for Olympians.

And I will maintain and grow our trusted relationship with the IOC.

In these times of global uncertainty, it is important that WOA enjoys stability, continuity, and the benefits of experience.

We are a winning team that you can trust to continue to deliver for you.

Candidate for Secretary General
German Antonio Glessner OLY

Candidate’s profile

Olympic Sport: Skeleton
Olympic Games competed in: Salt Lake City 2002
Country represented: Argentina

Manifesto

I am German Glessner, an Argentine/German Olympian, (March 8th 74, Argentina), running to be the next Secretary General of the World Olympians Association.

I represented Argentina at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Skeleton.

My sporting background, business experience, and extensive personal relations make me highly qualified for this position.

As a multilingual entrepreneur, I speak Spanish, English, French, German and Italian.

I have a university degree in International Business and had founded Glessner Group (Global Mergers & Acquisitions company) with more than 15 years of successful activity.

As a candidate for Secretary General, I will do my job of taking care of the NOAs and their leaders, respecting its individualities & needs.

• I plan to have
• Regional meetings
• Reunions at various Games
• Expand our news and information
• Frequent and personal contact with NOA leaders
• Develop and fund new programs for NOAs
• Increase and share our finances with the NOAs
• Offer educational opportunities to all Olympians
• Make us all feel proud to be Olympians!

When athletes retire (by will or forced by an injury), sometimes they are lost with the feeling of going from HERO TO ZERO.

We, as Olympians, need to guide them, making them feel that life continues, with new challenges. Therefore education and work need to be the pillars of life after sports, supporting athletes with the vocational test, scholarships, and tutors for their studies, as well as creating job opportunities by creating partnerships with International Human Resources companies.

Manifesto

As WOA Secretary-General, I am immensely proud of the progress we have made over the past years, a period of powerful momentum, sustained growth, and development.

This success would not have been possible without the passion, dedication, and strong collaboration from Joël and Patrick, our leadership team. Today we have a full-time staff of six to run our programs and support you. We are integrated into the IOC Sports Department to work more closely with the IOC Athletes team.

I am standing for re-election because I truly believe that the progress we have made together, and continue to make, will advance the organization and help it prosper in these times of uncertainty.

Among our many achievements, WOA has significantly increased its support to NOA’s. We hired two Development-Officers, instituted continental workshops, developed the NOA-Guide, and launched the WOA Grants Program.

We ensured Olympians are globally recognized and celebrated with the OLY scheme, which now boasts 13,500 Olympians worldwide.

We developed new programs to support Olympians at all stages of their lives. One hundred fifty-two postgraduate scholarships have been made available; we piloted mentoring programs and pioneered the Olympians Health Study.

We grew our influence within the Olympic Movement. Leveraging that will ensure the success of WOA: strong cooperation with the IOC, partnership with Airbnb at Tokyo 2020, and beyond.

It is not the moment to risk with improvisations. Our bold leadership will continue to advance WOA now and in the future.

Gracias

Olympic Games competed in: Turin 2006 (Skeleton), Salt Lake City 2002 (Luge), Nagano 1998 (Luge)
Country represented: Bermuda

Manifesto

As the World Olympians Association Treasurer, I have overseen the transformation of the WOA’s financial practices based on the principles of trust, transparency and good governance. If re-elected I will continue to build on this strong platform to ensure the WOA’s financial integrity is preserved.

My expertise is based on decades spent working in finance, media and financial regulation around the world, including at Bloomberg in Tokyo and London and in my native Bermuda where I am currently CEO of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company.

When I became WOA Treasurer our funding had already been frozen by the IOC after years of mismanagement by the previous administration. We had to rebuild trust and bring in robust financial practices. I'm proud to say we have successfully delivered this.

We consolidated the WOA accounts in Lausanne, introduced annual financial reporting and secure financial controls. We hired independent swiss accountants to help manage our accounts. And we have achieved clean audits each year from PwC.

We have restored the IOC’s trust, which has led to significant year over year budget increases. This money has allowed us to fund the NOA Grants programme (over $350,000 awarded so far), Development Officers, World Olympians Forums, Continental workshop and meetings, and the first-ever global Olympians health survey.

My special contribution, however, was creating OLY. To see this idea embraced by 14,000 Olympians worldwide brings me enormous pride.

In these uncertain times, it’s important to ensure stability and continuity. This is why I am standing again.

Thank you

Candidate’s profile

Olympic Sport: Athletics
Olympic Games competed in: Barcelona 1992, Seoul 1988, Los Angeles 1984
Country represented: Senegal

Manifesto

My Dear

My name is Amadou Dia BA.

I am currently Director of the African Athletics Development Center (DAKAR AADC). I'm also a member of the Executive Council of ANOCA and a member of the Executive Council of the Senegalese National Olympic Sports Committee. And I am ANOCA liaison on the IOC Athletes Commission.

I had the honor to participate in the Olympic Games of 1984, 1988 and 1992. I was Olympic silver medallist in the 400m hurdles in Seoul in 1988 and six (6) times African champion.

As a devout Olympian, I have dedicated my modest life to improving the lives of athletes during and after their careers. As Vice-President and a member of the Executive Committee of the WOA representing Africa, I have spared no effort for the sole purpose of bringing together Olympians from our dear Continent.

One of my main challenges is to find sustainable funds so that the structure can cover the costs of the NOAs.

My greatest achievement is to unite the African Olympians.

We must recognize that we still have a way to go to have the fifty-four (54) countries of the continent involved.

The experience on which I capitalize, my studies, my relationships and especially the mastery of the African environment are assets to carry out projects and put the Olympic train on track.

It is for these reasons that I am standing as a candidate for representation for Africa Male on the WOA Executive Committee for the next 4 years.

Andrew Owusu OLY

Candidate’s profile

Olympic Sport: Athletics
Olympic Games competed in: Athens 2004, Sydney 2000, Atlanta 1996
Country represented: Ghana

Manifesto

Greetings, fellow Olympians! I am Andrew Owusu from Ghana, your candidate for the position of male African representative on the WOA board.

My Olympic experience includes the 1996, 2000, and 2004 games in the long and triple jumps. I am also a four-time continental triple jump champion and still hold the African Championship record.

I have degrees in Sports Administration and Management as well as in Public Health, and humbly share this to highlight my service-oriented background.

At the heart of my candidacy are three simple principles that I subscribe to effective communication, transparency, and meaningful engagement.

As your African representative, I promise that these principles will dictate how I serve you. Using a service-leadership approach, I will work hard to help address your needs, foster cooperation and consensus-building between us and, together, inspire and support fellow African Olympians and prospects through Olympism.

Our well-known African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone; If you want to go far, go together." I do not work alone, and my philosophy makes me seek to work TOGETHER, with you, harmoniously.

This service philosophy comes from my clear understanding that I would not be where I am today without the help of others. So, in Ghana, I have worked with colleagues to raise over $1,000,000 in the last 6 years to support holistic development activities, and found college scholarships for over 50 athletes. I want to work with you on similar initiatives across Africa.

Thank you for your support!

Manifesto

Written manifesto
It’s my honor to be included in the stellar field of candidates for the position of WOA Female Representative of the Americas. For years, I have admired and looked up to the likes of Liston Bochette, Freida Nicholls, Dean Greenaway and many other regional giants - all of whom I’ve consulted at various points of my career and professional journey. It’s on their impeccable legacy and shoulders I stand, and that gives me the utmost confidence that I am fit for this position.

In thinking of how I would address the needs of the Olympians in the Americas, I am reminded of a powerful quote by Voltaire "Is there anyone so wise as to learn by the experience of others?". Much work has been done by the WOA leadership, the NOA’s and committed individuals over the years. It’s my goal to continue their vision. I intend to

• Make ensure the voice of the Americas is heard and counted at the WOA decision table, and that means maintaining regular conversations with regionals stakeholders as well as understanding their unique needs and vision
• Continuing the work of fostering unity within the region
• Using all available resources and connections to achieve the goals on our regional wish-list
• Making sure our Olympians are routinely aware of opportunities available to them

I believe our best assets are each other – and with your help and input we can continue to achieve great things and reach new heights.

Manifesto

Listen, Include and Share

I am running for the position of male representative of the Americas, and as such I would be honored to work on the above three pillars on your behalf.

I believe that in our differences lie our strengths, and if Olympians unite, we can be the role ambassadors of peace and equality around the world.

I have seen the evolution of the WOA, and as a representative of my country I can testify how far we have come and the awareness that we currently have in the IOC thanks to the hard work of those that lead us up until now. The new phase that began with appointing continental representatives I believe needs a bottoms up approach to understand the needs of Olympians in our region and to this I pledge my work with the next elected officials.

I will listen, by having regular topic specific meetings using technology tools that are now common.

I will work to Include more NOAs and more Olympians and Paralympians in the respective countries, we need to empower them to be more active and to play a key role in society supporting the Olympic movement.

To achieve this we need to Share our learnings, I will look for global practices that can be implemented in the region.

Troubled times and uncertainty lingers in the world, Olympians will keep the flame going, and it’s our time to get to work.

Manifesto

After my career as athlete, I have been an OCA Athletes Commission Chair, Chef de Mission of the Buenos Aires Olympic Youth Games, currently a NOC Executive Board member, and Sports Director of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. I am a WOA Exco member, and it would be my honour to continue my next term.

My achievement within the WOA as an Executive Committee for the past five years is that I have been involved in all the key decisions that have led to the launch programmes of OLY. The launch of the administration grants for NOAs and the Service to Society and Service to Olympians grants.

I have been instrumental in helping the WOA with finding a venue for OLY House and with building good relations with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and all stake holders.

I plan to take advantage of my hometown and my work as a Sport Director and the Deputy Mayor of the Olympic Village. With the approval from my colleagues, my plan is to host a WOA Athlete Forum, to share the excitement on site and spread the strong value and virtue of the Olympic Movement to the world on site.

A vote for me will help keep our WOA activities on going and alive, especially at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Manifesto

Dear Fellow Olympians,

It’s a great honour for me to serve on the World Olympians Association Board again. In the first four years as Chair of Asian Olympians, I was part of a great WOA team that achieved many successes. In particular, I am proud that, working as a unified team, we accomplished great things

2) Held two amazing WOA Asia workshops (at Asian Games and at South East Asian Games)
3) Staged a very successful World Olympians Forum in Lausanne – in partnership with the IOC with President Thomas Bach in attendance

My extensive experience in sports administration will allow me to take WOA’s success to even greater heights and in the coming four years my goals are to

1) Strengthen and grow existing NOAs and establish as many new ones
2) Forge closer working relationships with Asian NOAs with projects and forums across Asia
3) Work towards the betterment of Olympians and society

It is a great privilege to have served Olympians and I would feel deeply humbled to do this again with your kind support. I am always open to your suggestions and willing to work with you all to achieve our goals

I believe that Olympism is something more than just sports, it is the positive way we live life and this is a message I would like to convey to as many young people who aspire to be future Olympians

Candidate for Executive Committee Member Europe Female
Joslyn Hoyte-Smith OLY

Candidate’s profile

Olympic Sport: Athletics
Olympic Games competed in: Los Angeles 1984, Moscow 1980
Country represented: Great Britain

Manifesto

My name is Joslyn Hoyte Smith OLY, athletics double Olympian and bronze medal winner for Great Britain.

Over the last 15 years I have consistently applied the work ethic and qualities of an Olympian to make a positive difference in schools, colleges, universities and with various Sport Institutes in Great Britain. As a long-term foster parent to some of the most vulnerable children in society, I have also developed the ability to find solutions in even the toughest situations. All of these attributes I would bring to the role of WOA executive committee member.

For the last 8 years I have been Chair of the GB Olympians Association, leading it’s transformation from a stand-alone network organisation to one that has reached out to its members and beyond, fostering significantly positive relationships across a wide range of sectors including charities, media, business and of course with our NOC. We now have an ambitious agenda, not only to serve and celebrate with our members, but also to use their unique skills and experiences to serve the next generation, and our communities. I am incredibly proud to have led an organisation that listened to the London 2012 call to ‘inspire a generation’ and that has worked tirelessly since, to do just that.

I’m excited to now be offered the opportunity to move that energy, learning and passion onto a wider scale to support the even more ambitious projects that the WOA has set out to benefit the whole Olympic family.

Country represented: Sweden

Manifesto

I would like to be your Europe female board representative because I have more to give to you!

The last eight years, under the leadership of our President Joël Bouzou and his officers, have been overwhelming. The status of the WOA within the Olympic family has changed from almost non existing to have six employees working for the WOA at the IOC offices in Lausanne and to be fully funded by IOC. Having been the chair of the committee that worked out the changes to our statutes and bye-laws, that you voted for in Moscow, which enables us to vote for one female and one male representative to the WOA board from each continent, makes me proud today, as it happens for the first time. That means we will have a gender balanced board, as well as diversity when it comes to ethnicity and sports.

If you were to vote for me, I would like to continue to work for the health and wellbeing of Olympians. WOA launched a big Olympian health survey a few years ago. There are many good best practices out there, where Olympians are taken care of even after they stopped their career, but it is far from everywhere! "Once an Olympian, always and Olympian" is true, but we are not superstars forever and sometimes need to ask for help.

Manifesto

Dear fellow Olympians,

Sports is my life – I have participated at the Summer and Winter Games, and been member of several clubs in different sports, but one club that I'm proudest to be a member of is the Olympians club in my country. The voices of NOAs should always have a special strength in our societies. Croatian NOA has an important role in our society and sport politics – with close connections to our NOC (3 members in the Assembly and mandatory Olympic Committee vice-president seat), we have also succeeded to participate in creating Sports Law and to actively contribute in Ministry of Tourism and Sport. I have been actively involved with WOA in the last decade and worked closely with our President Joël Bouzou and his team for the past 9 years.

In this dramatically changing World, our goals, apart from representing the interest of Olympians and supporting them after their sport careers, are promoting the rules of fair-play, encouraging people from all ages to stay active and spending quality time with new generation of youth in the schools and communities.
There are more than 40 European NOAs, some with close connections and funding from their respective NOCs, but others with small resources and no government funding. Regardless of that status, our NOAs need to work more closely together and with WOA in order to exchange the ideas and help each individual NOA grow.

Kind regards from Split, Croatia

Manifesto

My vision is to live in a world where sport is played and enjoyed, every single day by every single person regardless of age, race, ability, religion or gender. In this world all sport is unbiased, impartial and untainted so that despite hardship there remains a genuine source of joy, fulfillment and unity.

The Olympic Games is the greatest demonstration of the power of sport to unite our world despite division. Ensuring it continues in this mission is the work of the many individuals involved in the Olympic Movement and the IOC including, the World Olympians Association (WOA).

It is a privilege to be nominated to represent the Oceania Continent on the WOA executive. Whether elected or not I will continue to have the following mindset.

• I believe in the power of the Olympic Movement, what it stands for and it's importance for future generations.
• I understand the core role of the Exco is improving the delivery of WOA's two objectives: Service to Society and Service to Olympians.
• I perform this role or others within the Olympic movement without the need for recognition nor reward.
• I understand this role is finite but the organisation is infinite.
• I strive to improve the effectiveness of the Executive Committee as a team.
• I continually seek to improve the contribution to and from my continental NOAs.
• I will always listen a lot before speaking.
• I will never be afraid to voice concern or disagreement.
• I accept that there is much to learn.
