Protocol of Agreement between the World Olympians Association and the Special Olympics

Whereas the World Olympians Association (an association composed of national associations) was created by the International Olympic Committee to encourage and assist the approximately 100,000 Olympians around the world to be active participants in the Olympic movement beyond their Olympic competition; and

 

Whereas Special Olympics is a global movement created in 1968 to provide sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for athletes with mental retardation and is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee and by numerous sporting organizations and National Olympic Committees; and

 

Whereas the World Olympians Association supports the athletic, social, and humanitarian purposes of Special Olympics; and

 

Whereas the World Olympians Association desires to provide Olympians with opportunities to be role models of excellence in action and to sharE the values of Olympism with Special Olympics athletes; and

 

Whereas the World Olympians Association is establishing National Associations of Olympic Athletes in all countries with National Olympic Committees; and

 

Whereas Special Olympics applauds the accomplishments of all Olympians; and

 

Whereas Special Olympics is supported by numerous governments, administrations, corporations, associations and leaders and seeks to create global public awareness and appreciation of the many gifts and accomplishments of Special Olympics athletes around the world; and

 

Whereas both Olympians and Special Olympics athletes are highly respected sports leaders internationally as well as in their home countries; and

 

Whereas the object of this Protocol is to set forth the principles of cooperation between the World Olympians Association and Special Olympics:

 

Now, therefore, the following is agreed between:

 

The World Olympians Association, represented by its President, Dr. Pál Schmitt, and
Special Olympics, Inc., represented by its President, Timothy P. Shriver, Ph.D.:

 

 ARTICLE 1: The World Olympians Association shall encourage its members to actively support Special Olympics activities around the world.

 ARTICLE 2: Special Olympics shall coordinate with the World Olympians Association to invite Olympians to participate in global, regional and national Special Olympics events. In addition, Special Olympics and national and local Special Olympics Programs shall work directly with Olympians with whom Special Olympics has continuing relationships.

 ARTICLE 3: The World Olympians Association shall arrange for local Special Olympics Programs to have access to local Olympians to the extent practical.

 ARTICLE 4: Neither the World Olympians Association nor Special Olympics shall have any financial or legal obligation to the other under this Protocol unless subsequently agreed otherwise by both parties.

 ARTICLE 5: This Protocol shall be valid for four years from the date of its signature and shall be automatically renewed for additional four-year periods, unless either party gives notice of termination to the other by registered letter to be sent three months before the end of the then current four-year term.
